Catalyst South Africa: Q&A with SarahBelle Selig & Izak de Vries

While our authors make us special, without SarahBelle Selig and Izak de Vries as part of our team, Catalyst Press would be missing a huge part of its heart and soul. While our U.S. team members keep things humming a world away, these two have made us a truly international company. Whether through their connections with South Africa’s literary community, or with the kind of personal touch that only comes from a face-to-face meeting, they have helped build Catalyst South Africa into, what we hope, is a part of the local reading scene. We couldn’t do any of this without them. Ashawnta Jackson, a U.S.-based Catalyst team member, chatted to the pair about their work.

SarahBelle, can you tell us a bit about your role at Catalyst? What is the South African branch up to?

Specifically in South Africa, I’ve got a bit of a liaison role, which means I’m working face to face with our local authors, our South African distributor, and the many great booksellers and educators we’re connected with here. Izak and I also tag team our local publicity: everything from getting reviews for our authors in South African media, to getting them on panels at festivals.

We’re having so much fun at Catalyst South Africa these days! We’ve ramped up our events, from book launches and comics workshops, to author readings at local school libraries and even a beach cleanup. We hosted a booth at the inaugural Comic Con Cape Town to show off our amazing line up of African graphic novels and to connect with readers. We’re busy prepping the release of our first ever Afrikaans book for kids, and we’re actively building out our relationships with local nonprofits, bookstores, and schools. The Catalyst office is definitely the most active here that it’s ever been, I’d say.

A #ReadingAfrica Wrap-up

First things first: whew! This year’s event was a huge one. We had three live panels, two written round-tables, two guest posts, a playlist, and one pre-recorded panel. We had a week-long #ReadingAfrica challenge, announced a new book, had two booklists on Bookshop.org (including one that was featured on the site’s front page) and even saw a #ReadingAfrica in-store bookstore display. This may have been our biggest one yet. Seriousl, look at all of this:

When we started #ReadingAfrica Week, we thought small. We were small, after all. We’d just unfurled our “Open for Business” banner earlier that year, and the idea was simple. We just wanted a way to announce ourselves and to shine a spotlight on our colleagues in indie publishing who were doing some of the same work we were. We couldn’t have imagined that six #ReadingAfrica Weeks later, we’d have formed incredible partnerships, built a reading community, gathered together writers and publishers, and because we’re readers too, we’ve also been excited to discover even more books and writers and publishers to love. This has been a great event.

In this post, we’re going to point you to everything we did this year, plus share one new bit of fun. We asked our panelists from our live events to share some of their favorite reads, and we’d like to share those with you. And don’t forget, you can find many of our panelists’ books in this booklist. A #ReadingAfrica Conversation: Literary agents Raphaël Thierry and Emma Shercliff Discuss Representing African Writers, Part 2

Welcome back to this fabulous conversation between literary agents Raphaël Thierry and Emma Shercliff! Yesterday, Raphaël and Emma discussed their journeys towards agenting, the contract “just behind the book”, and protecting author rights. I would be very curious to ask you, Emma, how do you just set up a relation with a writer? Are you always solicited? Or are you just trying to catch up with a writer when you met him or her and you have this opportunity? How do you create this link, because the connection you have with the writer is extremely important in your work as agent. I’m very curious to know how this relation is set up for you.

Emma Shercliff  

So when I started, of course I set up a submissions process for my agency. But I thought initially, it would be about me going out and looking for people and really seeking out writers. And that certainly was the case to begin with. But now, many of the writers that I represent have come to me through personal recommendations from other writers. And that always feels like such a huge compliment, when an author that you have worked with and published yourself feels that you would make a good agent and then recommends you to somebody that they are either mentoring or know, so that’s been a very productive source of new writers for me. And there are other ways.

Recently, I approached an author that I heard on a podcast, a Ukrainian writer actually, and I just thought this woman is amazing, I want to reach out to her and so I did that. And another conversation I’ve had recently was with an author from a particular African country that I don’t yet represent any authors from. And I have been looking for a woman from that country for a long time. And so I reached out to her. So sometimes you can have in mind ideas of the type of writing and perhaps sometimes the geographical region and then if somebody happens to come across your radar from those areas, then your ears prick up. Is that the same for you, Raphaël?

I don’t want to sound a bit naïve but if I don’t feel confident enough with someone I’m working with, then how can a book find its way and how can I find perspective for this book?

Raphaël Thierry  

It’s not completely the same but speaking about co-agenting that’s a very interesting take because I think everyone doesn’t know but as agents we cannot reach every part of the world in every language, so it’s very precious to cultivate these good relations and collaborations with other agents with whom we can collaborate on some projects and propose some books which might fit within the territory or language or country where they are more able to grasp the publishing industry and the publisher’s interest. And I feel as an agent, the first part of the work is maybe to have humility. And rather than doing everything ourselves, sometimes it’s better to build up strong relations in this industry.

And I really point out the industry aspect, because it’s also a business and within a business people are always central. And I don’t want to sound a bit naïve but if I don’t feel confident enough with someone I’m working with, then how can a book find its way and how can I find perspective for this book? And so it’s essential to have this close relation you were speaking about, this recommendation you got from writers, and that’s so heartwarming, but it’s also the proof that you’re professionally respected, and that you’re dealing properly with books, and that writers recognise it. And that’s very important, because the centre of their work as writers is to write. And the centre of your work as an agent is to deal with rights. And that’s essential, to be extremely clear on each position and each work, I guess.

Emma Shercliff  

The experience I had at Cassava Republic was so formative for me in that respect, in that I loved the fact that we were so focused. As you’ll know, like anybody in the publishing world – and I was a publisher for 20 years – you’d go to an event or meet somebody socially and when you say you’re a publisher, then someone will say, Oh, my aunt’s best friend’s cousin’s daughter has written a book, can you look at it? Or, my next-door neighbour has written a children’s book, can you get her published? And I loved the fact that at Cassava Republic, I would always say, oh, does this writer have any African connection? And if the answer was no, then I would say, Oh, I’m sorry, you need to find someone else. I really loved that focus. You know, it’s a shift, it’s helpful.

So when I started the agency with this focus on authors from Norfolk and Suffolk, and then authors broadly from underrepresented backgrounds, I did state specifically on my website as I launched that I was looking for authors in Africa, the Middle East, and Ukraine, because they all geographical territories in which I’ve worked and that I feel very comfortable navigating. It’s helpful for authors, and it’s helpful for me. So I think that you’re right, you can’t take on the whole world or represent everyone. So being focused, particularly at smaller agencies like yours and mine, I think that’s really important. And of course, you’re undoubtedly going to feel more passionate about authors coming from those areas, or with those interests that you wish to represent.

One other thing I wanted to say, Raphaël, just talking about territories and rights, is that so much of the way I operate as an agent has been informed by the way I worked as a publisher and my experience as a publisher. So for example, I always reserve rights for African authors. If I’m taking on an author who has a link to say, Kenya or South Africa or Nigeria, I would always reserve rights for Africa, and then sell very specifically to publishers in those countries. That’s one of my agency commitments and I take it very seriously.

As part of our week-long celebration, we have the privilege of posting this exclusive guest post from literary agents Raphaël Thierry and Emma Shercliff, a transcript of their recent conversation about all things African literature. The conversation is split into two parts—the first published below, and Part 2 to be published tomorrow! 

Over the past several years, we’ve received many amazing manuscripts by African writers from both Raphaël and Emma, and it’s with great excitement that we officially introduce them to our Catalyst Press community today. We hope you enjoy this fascinating conversation between two very well-established professionals in the African publishing space, where they discuss everything from translations and authors rights, to exciting new projects and big trends in the industry (and one very special announcement!).

Hello Emma. Nice to see you, too. How are you doing? Long time no see. I think last time we met was in Geneva, in Switzerland, right?

Yes, many years ago, at the Salon du Livre, in a pre-COVID existence. 

Raphaël Thierry  

Absolutely. Which made our lives so challenging and at the same time so exciting, especially as agents. And I think that’s a key part of this discussion we are having together today thanks to Catalyst and this exciting reading project. And hopefully, we can give some good updates about our work and I’m very happy that we can share this moment together.

Emma Shercliff  

Yes, it’s a great opportunity to have a chance to catch up. So I’m delighted to see you.

Catalyst South Africa is Growing!

Hi everyone!

If we haven’t met, I’m SarahBelle Selig and I’m the South African Office Head for Catalyst Press—or as I like to call it, “boots on the ground” in Cape Town for all things Catalyst. My role changes by the day: it could be publicizing a new book, meeting with our distributors, coordinating an event, or, my personal favorite, catching up with one of our amazing authors.

We’ve had a few big changes here in South Africa lately, including transitioning to our new local distributor, Protea Distribution, releasing a new fiction book and a graphic novel, and last but certainly not least, welcoming a new member to the team, Izak de Vries!

Izak de Vries

Izak is technically new to Catalyst, but he’s been a part of the Catalyst family for years. He previously worked for our former distributor Lapa Uitgewers, but he’s also been a close friend of Jessica’s for many years—so he’s been an incredible friend to the press since our founding in 2017, and has been a champion of our books in more ways than one. Now, Izak writes for LitNet, and he has graciously joined our team part-time to help me steer the boat and expand our work here in South Africa.

Whether it’s out and about at a book launch, or sipping cups of coffee in his Mowbray home with a dog in my lap, I love any opportunity I get to work with (and learn from) Izak, so I’m especially thrilled that he’s joined the team. And I can’t wait to introduce him to you today!

Peter Church Interviewed in The Big Thrill Magazine

Last month marked the release of Bitter Pill, the final book in Peter Church’s Dark Web Trilogy, a page-turning series that explores the dark side of our digital lives.

Peter recently chatted with Michael Sears of The Big Thrill magazine to talk about his latest book, his inspiration for the book, and how his writing process has been affected by the ongoing coronavirus lockdown in South Africa. All three books of the trilogy are out now, and all summer long, we’re offering a special price on the e-books when you buy from our site!

BITTER PILL is the third book in Peter Church’s trilogy centered on Dark Video, a malevolent pornography organization that skulks on the dark web.

The protagonist, Robbie Cullen, is a student who becomes unwittingly caught in Dark Video’s tentacles. After a chance encounter with a girl who turns out to be a stripper, he’s shocked to discover that he stars in an online sex video. When he tries to resolve the issue with the stripper, he discovers her dead.

In parallel, we follow the exploits of Julian Lynch, one of Dark Video’s customers for victims of the Mickey Finn Club—barmen who spike girls’ drinks with a date rape drug. And pulling the strings of all this is Carlos Da Palma, the secretive man behind Dark Video. He trusts no one except Samuel Chester, his hitman.

BITTER PILL is a twisty book with memorable villains. Church talks more about it in this exclusive interview for The Big Thrill.

This Week in Literary News: Week of July 26

Hello everybody! We’re back for this week’s literary roundup

Not surprisingly, COVID-19 continues to affect the publishing industry. This week, Charlie’s Corner, a children’s bookstore in San Francisco closed, and Powell’s in Portland, Oregon closed its airport store. Both bookstores said they hoped to be return in some fashion but can’t predict the future. Barnes & Noble, however, is reopening stores. While overall, book sales have plummeted in 2020, booksellers in Italy, Romania, and France have reported a recent sales spike. According to Shelf Awareness, Black-owned bookstores are continuing to see record sales of key Black-authored titles. Our own amazing marketing manager, Ashawnta Jackson, wrote an piece a couple of weeks ago about the first Black-owned bookstore in the US, and the importance of these stores in Black communities.

In awards news:

The Theory of Flight

Two African writers, Tsitsi Dangarembga (Zimbabwe, This Mournable Body) and Maaza Mengiste (Ethiopia, The Shadow King), were longlisted for the Booker Prize. We’re pleased. We’re longtime fans of Tsitsi Dangarembga, plus she has blurbed a forthcoming book from Catalyst Press, The Theory of Flight by Siphiwe Ndlovu. [Ed Note: This post was written before we heard about Tsitsi’s arrest in Zimbabwe earlier today. Tsitsi was arrested along with several others at a protest both against government corruption and calling for the release investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono. We stand with Tsitsi and all fighting for justice and free expression]

The 2020 Caine Prize winner was also announced, with Nigerian-British writer Irenosen Okojie winning with her short story “Grace Jones,” about a Grace Jones impersonator with a dark secret. Visit the Caine Prize site to read Irenosen’s story, and those of the other shortlisted authors. It’s a great story to end the week.

This Week in Literary News, Week of June 28

After losing South African treasure Elsa Joubert last week, we said goodbye to two more literary legends, including the father of Chicano literature Rudolfo Anaya, and Charles Webb, the man who gave us The Graduate.

Queenie author Candice Carty-Williams became the first Black author to win Book of the Year at the British Book Awards, and Girl, Woman, Other author Bernadine Evaristo also scored an award. Here’s what Carty-Williams had to say about her win.

On that note, The New York Times published a collection of interviews with Black authors, agents, editors and booksellers on what it means to Black in publishing. A collaborative research report on the industry, titled “Rethinking ‘Diversity’ in Publishing,” (PDF) was also released this week, featuring a foreword by Evaristo.

John Bolton’s hotly debated memoir sold over 780,000 copies in its first week, and another Trump book is on the way: a New York court gave Simon & Schuster the green light to publish President Trump’s niece Mary L. Trump’s tell-all book, set to release this month.

A previously unpublished, unfinished story from Little Women author Louisa May Alcott was released this week, and it looks like we may not have to wait much longer for the next Game of Thrones book. More good news: Lucasfilm just announced a huge publishing deal to produce a series of novels, storybooks, comics and more, based on the wildly popular Star Wars spin-off, The Mandalorian.

We have two new additions to our “Conversations with…” YouTube series, a series of conversations with Catalyst authors, friends, and partners. This week, our publisher Jessica Powers is in conversation with A Road Called Down on Both Sides author Caroline Kurtz and Bunmi Emenanjo, founder of Atlas Book Club. And ICYMI: check out my conversation with Small Mercies author Bridget Krone last week.

On LitHub, Meghan Cox Gurdon recounts the ancient skill of oral storytelling and argues why we should be reading aloud more often.
