Q&A with Tsitsi Mapepa

Introducing our readers to new and emerging voices in the literary space is our favorite thing to do here at Catalyst Press. One voice in particular stands out to me this year: Tsitsi Mapepa, the debut author of Ndima Ndima, which releases on November 7th.

Born and raised in Zimbabwe, now living in New Zealand, Tsitsi received her Master’s in Creative Writing from the University of Auckland in 2020. Her work is honest, heart-wrenching, and illuminating—and we are so honored to share it with our readers. Booklist calls Ndima Ndima “[a] truly insightful debut from an exciting new Zimbabwean author with a talent for writing the human experience,” and we couldn’t agree more! 

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Tsitsi and chat a little bit about this incredible story.

SarahBelle Selig: Tsitsi. thank you so much for making time to speak with me! To start off, tell me about the process of writing Ndima Ndima. 

Tsitsi Mapepa: I am a perfectionist, I want things organized, but when it comes to my writing, I am a pantser (I work by the seat of my pants). The stories in Ndima Ndima were never written in order. It helped me when I got stuck, unsure of what to write following the finished story. So I jumped to the most exciting stories I had in mind. I still do this, even when I’m writing a novel. I know some writers would find it strange and time consuming when it comes to structural development, but that’s just how I craft my stories.

SS: Have you always enjoyed writing?

TM: Yes, I started writing when I was young. When I was in high school I attempted writing a novel, which I never finished. And I also wrote a collection of poetry on loose papers and notebooks.

SS: You emigrated from Zimbabwe in 2007. What was been your expat experience? Did writing Ndima Ndima feel like going home?

TM: I moved to New Zealand because my husband was already here. So, for the two of us, it was a new beginning. For me, the most challenging thing was raising our children in the absence of our closed ones. In our culture, we strongly rely on other family members for extra support.

When it came to creating the landscape in Ndima Ndima, it was like scraping for the images of a home buried at the core of my heart. This part of the novel left me with a smiling soul, because I could see what I miss on the page.

This Week in Literary News: Week of March 14

Here’s a little something for the comics lovers. Michigan State University is hosting “Beyond the Black Panther: Visions of Afrofuturism in American Comics,” a virtual exhibit exploring “how themes such as aesthetics, Black feminism, and community, common to Afrofuturism, shape contemporary Black comics.”

And speaking of Afrofuturism, check out this great article at LitHub— Emily Lordi talks with pioneering musician Nona Hendryx: “There’s a whole group of speculative fiction nerd people, of which I count myself one,” who connect online and eventually collaborate—“you sort of come out of your Afrofuturism closet at some point and go ‘Ah, yes, I am just a nerd as well! I may look like this,’” she said, gesturing at her glamorous self, “‘but this is what I am.’”

Seeing yourself and your stories in the media is such a valuable and important thing. In this article from Smithsonian magazine, a profile of children’s book author Alicia D. Williams on writing the stories she wished she could see as a child. On the importance of sharing these stories with young readers, Williams says, “They’re in control of the information when they write the narrative themselves, from their point of view, instead of accepting what’s been told to them. Give them the information, and they’re the storytellers. That’s what I want.”

A wonderful and always timely project, Black and Asian Feminist Solidarities, a collaboration between Black Women Radicals and the Asian American Feminist Collective, “looks to Black and Asian American feminist histories, practices, and frameworks on care, community, and survival for the tools and strategies to continue to build towards collective liberation.” There are reading lists, interviews, articles, and more. And over at the Atlantic, an interview with author Cathy Park Hong on the wave racist attacks against Asian people.

Want to explain vaccines to a kid in your life? A new graphic novel might be just the thing. But as this New York Times article points out, the form that book takes— physical or digital— might matter. “Print makes it easier for parents and children to interact with language, questions and answers, what is called “dialogic reading.” Further, many apps and e-books have too many distractions.”

In Catalyst news, two of our wonderful authors got works published this week! In New Frame, Unmaking Grace author Barbara Boswell writes on the role of Booker shortlisted author Tsitsi Dangarembga’s art and activism in Zimbabwe and beyond, and The Lion’s Binding Oath author Ahmed Ismail Yusuf evaluates what the death of George Floyd and – just a few months later and a few blocks away – the death of Somali-American Dolal Idd means for the future of the American police force.

In celebrity book news, E.L. James, famed author of the Fifty Shades of Grey series, announced a new book in the series to be published this summer: Freed, written from Christian Grey’s perspective. Fans of the cult television series “American Horror Story” are reading Dante’s The Divine Comedy after a fan theory went viral, and a self-published cookbook by Andy Warhol is going to auction later this month and is expected to sell for no less than $30,000. And ICYMI (although I don’t see how), Dr. Seuss‘ publishing house has made the decision to cease printing of six of the author’s earlier children’s books, including McElligot’s Pool and And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, on account of racist imagery and derogatory character portrayals. This Week in Literary News: Week of July 19

We lost civil rights hero and U.S. Representative John Lewis this week, who died on July 17 at the age of 80. You should go and read everything he’s ever written, but in the meantime, read this Brain Pickings feature and ten of his best quotes on getting into “good trouble.”

THE FARM

Here at Catalyst, we celebrated the South African release of Max Annas’ thriller The Farm (translated by Rachel Hildebrandt Reynolds) with a virtual book launch with Boekemakranka featuring Izak DeVries of LAPA Uitgewers, our South African distributor. The Farm is out now in South Africa, and comes to North American readers in September (you can pre-order it here).

Calling all His Dark Materials fans: Phillip Pullman just announced a new novella based on the bestselling series, to be released in October. And in comic news: the original 2003 Walking Dead comic book is being re-released in full color, and A-list action star Keanu Reeves is writing a comic book (and casually slipped that he’d like to play the lead character in a movie rendition – so that’s probably happening).

ICYMI: in early June, a bunch of big-name authors (including Atwood, Gladwell, Rowling, Rushdie, and Steinem) penned an open letter about the dangers of cancel culture in Harper’s Magazine. But then a counter letter was released in The Objective, calling out the authors of the Harper’s letter for writing from a place a privilege (among other grievances). Catch up on the drama here. NPR responded with typical Swiss neutrality vibes by getting authors from both letters on a podcast together.

African Arguments released a three-part interview with the 2020 AKO Caine Prize Nominees. Check out Part 1 on joy and writing, Part 2 on reading and the politics of prizes, and Part 3 on what it means to be mainstream.

COVID-19 has hit the book world hard: according to a survey from nonprofit Americans for the Arts, 253 literary organizations reported over $7.2 million total losses to date. But it’s not all bad: with bookstores and festivals shut down, big box retailers like Walmart and Costco have been helping readers get their fix, and three literary nonprofits teamed up with the Mellon Foundation this week to create a Literary Arts Emergency Fund, distributing $5,000 to $50,000 grants to literary organizations across the United States. And one book festival in the United Kingdom came up with an innovative way to bring joy to book lovers at a distance: a drive-in book fair.
