We are fundamentally committed to publishing quality literature that we’re proud to acquire, edit, develop, promote and sell. We are a hands-on publishing house, in love with the books we publish and the authors we promote.
AI Statement:
Catalyst Press, our imprint for African writers and illustrators or for African-based books, offers primarily traditional publishing contracts and publishes approximately 6-8 titles a year. You or your agent can submit during our annual reading period in July & August. Submit a synopsis, bio, pitch, and up to 50 pages to submissions@catalystpress.org. This imprint is also open to publishing partnerships, which allows us to expand Catalyst’s African-centered publishing program.
Flare Books and Powers Squared operate as publishing partnerships with authors in North America and around the world. Sometimes called “hybrid” or “co-publishing,” these two imprints operate as a business partnership between author and publisher.
How It Works
In our publishing partnership or hybrid model, authors help front the costs of editing, developing, publishing, printing, and marketing their books.

We want to empower authors to understand the scope of the publishing and writing business, and to connect with other authors. It’s part of our job to help you understand how the sausage is made—and to help you be as successful as you can be.
We aim for excellence, as books we publish join our award-winning list. Our books are regularly featured in Kirkus Reviews, Foreword Reviews, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, World Literature Today, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and more.
To submit to Flare Books, Flare Kids, or Powers Squared, please submit a synopsis, bio, pitch, and up to 50 pages to submissions@catalystpress.org. Please indicate in the subject header that this is a Flare or Powers Squared submission. We will consider your submission carefully. If accepted, we will assess costs relevant to editorial, production, and marketing based on your particular book.

AI Statement
We understand with the advent of AI, many creators are using AI to generate ideas and writing and illustration, sometimes fully and sometimes as a base from which to launch their own creation. At Catalyst Press and all our imprints, we are committed to publishing fully human-authored and fully human-illustrated books, from beginning to end. Likewise, our editorial and production/design processes are fully human. While we have no wish to judge the processes that creators take, or that other publishers may accept, we prefer the imperfect, grace-filled process that is human art, with all of its foibles and weaknesses as well as its ability to soar us to the height of beauty, truth, and human emotion. No matter how intelligent and creative AI becomes, it will never be human. To the best of our abilities and knowledge, understanding that we may not always recognize the difference between something that is AI-derivative and something that is fully human-derivative, we stand with human creators, editors, and publishers.
