Inungi
John Stanford was born in 1929 on Inungi, his father’s farm in East Griqualand, South Africa. He qualified as a civil engineer, worked for a year in Canada, and then returned to Inungi to farm.
Cut off from the rest of the province by the Umzimvubu River, Inungi was mountainous and remote. Horses were indispensable as transport, fire and flood were ever-present hazards. This captivating memoir spans John’s life from his childhood years through 1984, when the farm was sold.
Thrilling and unforgettable, Inungi tells of the risks and rewards of a self-sustaining life, in a remote and mountainous part of South Africa.
