New Releases This Month

We’re pleased to release two great new books this month: Divine Justice, by Joanne Hichens and The Theory of Flight by Siphiwe Gloria Ndlovu. Both books are available now through your favorite bookseller (but we’d love it if you chose an independent bookstore!)

The first in Joanne Hichens’ Rae Valentine series, Divine Justice introduces us to newly-minted private eye, Rae, a recovering drug addict fresh off a breakup and teamed up with an alcoholic business partner who just can’t seem to get it right. When she’s hired to find a set of missing diamonds, she finds herself in the middle of a violent world of white supremacy and religious zealots—a world that definitely doesn’t want someone like her around—the case may be more than she can handle. From Cape Town to the banks of the Orange River in Namibia, the tension rises as Rae fights for her life and discovers that the missing diamonds are linked to the illicit dealings of the brutal gang without conscience.
Praise for Divine Justice

“Staccato prose moves the action along at a machine-gun pace reminiscent of classic hard-boiled mysteries. Rae and the cutthroat streets of Cape Town aren’t for the faint of heart, but fans of George V. Higgins and James Ellroy are sure to have a blast.” — Publishers Weekly

“[T]he tension ratchets up with each page and the plot unspools toward its rousing, raucous and stunning conclusion!”— The Mysterious Book Report

“Divine Justice is a no-nonsense, walloping thriller, with an intoxicating and smart protagonist in Rae Valentine. Be sure to find a comfortable spot before opening the book because once you’re taken on the ride it is hard to get off.” ― David Swinson, author of The Second Girl and Trigger

“Divine Justice is both an intriguing mystery and a brilliant character study, presenting vivid snapshots of desperate people straddling the fault lines in contemporary South Africa. A gripping narrative that rushes to a thrilling climax.” Roger Smith, author of Mixed Blood, Nowhere, Wake Up Dead, and Dust Devil

“With vivid imagery, punchy dialogue and black humor, Divine Justice establishes Joanne Hichens as a compelling voice in the world of crime fiction.” Jassy Mackenzie, author of Bad Seeds and Pale Horse

As Imogen Zula Nyoni, aka Genie, lies in a coma at Mater Dei Hospital, her family and friends struggle to come to terms with her impending death. This is the story of Genie, who has gifts that transcend time and space. With the lightest of touches, and with an overlay of magical-realist beauty, this novel sketches, through the lives of a few families and the fate of a single patch of ground, decades of national history (a country in southern Africa that is never named) – from colonial occupation through the freedom struggle. At turns mysterious and magical, but always honest, The Theory of Flight explores the many ways we lose those we love before they die.

Winner of the Barry Ronge Fiction Prize

“Ndlovu’s deeply moving and complex novel is astonishing for the amount of hope it evokes despite the darkness that’s so pervasive in Genie’s world, where she creates her own reality in order survive. This transcendent and powerful testament to the indomitable human spirit is not to be missed.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A dazzling novel of delicate and astonishing magic. The Theory of Flight is a joyful tapestry of characters shaped but never deformed by the tensions of the times they traverse, narrated in prose of devastatingly beautiful simplicity.” Tsitsi Dangarembga, author of This Mournable Body

“The Theory of Flight is a prodigious, time-stopping concerto that decisively places Siphiwe Gloria Ndlovu on the global stage. A writer to watch.” —NoViolet Bulawayo, author of We Need New Names

“An epic novel written with such wit and ingenuity. I was unable to put this book down, in awe of Ndlovu and her stunning virtuoso, the ways she brings these unforgettable characters into a magical world with such delightful of prose. Beautiful and utterly sublime. My novel of the year.” — Novuyo Tshuma, author of House of Stone
